Just got back from my viewing of It, and thought I'd give my 2 cents while the movie is fresh in my mind. First off, the movie kept me very entertained throughout. It is a very fun viewing experience, mostly due to the excellent visuals. Modern technology in film can help make horror classics great again, and sometimes worse. In this case it was executed perfectly, making Pennywise seem to be a terrifying antagonist.
The movie is very well-made and the actors and actresses give mostly good performances. I've been a huge horror fan my whole life and find many horror movies that people find to be very good to be bad, and vice versa. In this case the movie is definitely good, but not as good as it's hyped up to be.
The cons that are nagging at me is that the movie does paint some horrifying scenarios for your eyes to see, and it definitely is fun to see. But what makes great horror movies amazing is having an eerie or terrifying atmosphere to go with it. In It, you love what you see but it doesn't provide a creepy atmosphere with it. I never felt on the edge of my seat or wanting to cover my eyes because I'm scared of what's about to happen. For many this won't be a problem, but a lot of what I love in horror movies is the feeling of adrenaline and fear the good ones provoke.
Along with that my only other complaint is the ending, SPOILERS AHEAD. It felt very clichéd (especially one completely laughable scene reminding me of Snow White) and tried too hard to give a heartwarming ending. The movie built Pennywise to be this terrifying and formidable monster who can play with your mind and seemingly take your life at any moment, only to make him seem like a little wimp at the climax. This horrible monster apparently is defeated fairly easily by a couple kids with poles, and without much of a fight to be honest.
Overall, visually horrifying and very well put together. Nightmare scenarios somehow aren't accompanied with any scary atmosphere and without provoking real fear. A fantastic build up only to be let down by a subpar-at-best climax and ending. Very entertaining film, but leaves you feeling like it was missing something small to give it some real oomph that makes it stay with you and linger in your mind like all the best horror movies do. It came very close, It had all the tools, but came just inches short from the endzone that would've made it one of the most terrifying movies in recent years.
